Panel: Investing sustainably and safely in today’s risky world
The world has changed considerably in the past 12 months. From dealing with the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, economic recession, inflation, supply chain issues, and an energy crisis not seen in decades, there are many factors that need to be considered by any digital infrastructure investor. This panel will discuss the current macroeconomic landscape of Europe and how to circumnavigate these risks from geopolitics to power, to brand risks.

Case Study: Creating a symbiotic relationship between power users and power generators Energia and Microsoft
As one of the world’s mega-consumers of power data centre operators and occupiers are often criticised as being bad for sustainability. However, the reality is very different and these mega-consumers have the ability to create positive change and help underpin more renewables development. The recent announcement by Microsoft and Energia of their venture to for Energia to develop multiple onshore renewables assets with Microsoft buying the power generated is a great example of what can be achieved. BCLP acted for Energia in the venture. In this session we will look at how that deal came together and lessons that the industry can learn from it.

Panel: Is green financing killing the planet?
Today’s investors wrestle with confusing ESG terminology, definitions, and labels and the rapid growth of ESG funds has raised questions about its credibility, with both sceptics and idealists alike touting examples of greenwashing or social-responsibility spin. This is in return shifting the green financing conversation from one where capital was readily available to an area where due diligence and careful undertaking of measurements is paramount. In this session, experts will debate the risks associated with green financing, if it makes sense in this ever evolving industry, what the short and long term risks and opportunities are for both backers and infrastructure operators, and ultimately if green financing has reached its end.
